Pender - The Total Getaway
There are two Pender islands: South and
North. Separated by a narrow canal, they are joined by a
bridge. From the canal you can see both Browning Harbour
and Bedwell Harbour, which have visitor facilities,
including moorings, motels, stores and restaurants. The
two islands stretch for 16 km (10 miles).
Miles of good beaches are found here, along with three
lakes, a 9-hole golf course and a frisbee golf course.
The islands can be toured by car, on a 45-kilometer (28
mile) drive. Don't be confused by the ever-changing names
on the main road, which takes you from south to north. On
the north island it's called Bedwell Harbour Rd., which
becomes Armdale Road. In the center of the north island
it changes to Canal Road and keeps that name on the south
island. The 40 miles of shoreline include many small bays
and beaches, mostly cobble.
The Pender Islands make a great place for a total
getaway -- where you can relax in a quiet waterside
setting for several days, or a week, or more. Exploring
the waters around the two islands, and the nearby islands
of the archipelago -- by canoe, kayak, sailboat, or
motorboat -- provides a very satisfying time.
How to Get There
The ferries land at Otter Bay. Port Washington
Road leads from this small, quiet community and heads to
join Bedwell Harbour Rd. and your drive to the southern
end of the island and on to the south island.
Tourist services are available at Driftwood
Centre, where there is a small shopping mall with a
cafe, grocery, liquor store and post office. While you're
here, be sure to visit Razor Point by taking Razor Point
Road to a public wharf beside a small beach.
After you cross the canal on to the south island, turn
on to Spalding Road which leads to Bedwell Harbour. There
is a resort and marina here, including a restaurant and
pub.
One of the most scenic spots on the islands is at
Gowlland Point, which has excellent views of the
San Juan Islands which lie just to the south of this
island chain.
