and exploring the parks on the west shore of the

Roche Harbor
(360-378-2155)
The resort at Roche Harbor is one of the most
intriguing vacation places on the Pacific Coast. It was a
Hudson's Bay Company trading post, and then the
headquarters for a limestone mining and shipping
operation from the mid-1800s.
The historic hotel is a gem, and the resort's
restaurant (next door) overlooks the harbor and serves
local seafood. The chapel -- very popular for weddings --
is the only privately-owned consecrated Roman Catholic
church in the U.S. A short walk takes you to the McMillan
Mausoleum, the resting place for the family which owned
the lime operation. For information and reservations,
write Roche Harbor Resort, Roche Harbor WA 98250, or call
the phone number (above).

Public camping on the island is restricted to the
County Park, but there are three private campgrounds.
Lake Dale Campground (360-378-2350) is at Roche Harbor.

Lopez Island Camping
Spencer Spit State Park offers a different view of the
ocean from the northeast side of Lopez Island. With a
mile-long sandy beach, the park offers walking trails, a
covered picnic area, and nearly 50 campsites. The sites
are perfect for bicycle campers, however they are quite
primitive without the normal conveniences.
On Shaw Island
Shaw County Park is the only place to stay on
this small, least-visited island in the San Juans.
Located at the south end of the island, it has one of the
best beaches in the archipelago, and this is one of the
few places where the water gets warm enough for swimming.
There are a dozen campsites, a boat ramp, toilets, and
drinking water. Nature trails lead along the shoreline
and through the woods.
