Haines Junction & Kluane National Park - Yukon

Home | Hotels | Car Rentals | Air Tickets | Destinations | Vacation Guides

Haines Junction is a strip of motels, service stations, and restaurants at the junction of the Alaska Highway and Haines Road. What is really notable is nearby Kluane National Park. Haines Junction was established with the construction of the Alaska Highway in 1942. The Haines Road now links the Yukon with the Alaska Marine Highway at Haines on the Lynn Canal.

Kluane is the gem of Yukon parks and a national wilderness treasure. Mount Logan, located in the park, is the highest peak in Canada. Glaciers in the gigantic ice field fill several mountain valleys. They range in length from 10 KM (6 miles) to 100 KM (62 miles).

Park environments range from lush river valleys with aspen and spruce, to alpine meadows filled with grasses, and the higher reaches where moss campion, Arctic poppies, and other plants thrive on the alpine tundra. There is only one campground in the park, at Kathleen Lake -- on the Haines Highway.

The village's Visitor Reception Centre is located off the Alaska Highway, a joint information desk for the Yukon government and Kluane National Park. Maps for canoe trips and hiking trails may be obtained from park staff. For park information, call (867) 634-2345. Yukon Gold, the tourist radio service (FM-96.1), originates here. For advance information on Haines Junction events and facilities, call (867) 634-2291.

The village has several places to stay, all motels, plus RV parks, restaurants, and stores. The Village Bakery, a great place for campers and picnickers, is located next to the Kluane National Park visitor center. You should be able to buy sourdough bread in the original home of the sourdough, and this is the place! For groceries and other camping supplies, stop at Madley's General Store.

A good place to buy all kinds of bakery goods and deli items (including salmon smoked right here) is the Junction Bakery, located at Logan and Kluane streets. You can buy a wide range of bread, pastries, and soups as well as deli sandwiches. It is open from May through September. Live music is available on Friday evenings.
