Located
278 KM (173 miles) north of Watson Lake, Teslin is a
picturesque lakeside community, where members of the
Teslin Indian Band make up the majority of the residents.
A small trading post was established here in 1903, mainly
to serve the Tlingit people.
This
nomadic band of First Nations People roamed throughout
this area for centuries. With a population of 450, Teslin
is located on the shores of Teslin Lake. The bridge here
is the longest on the Alaska Highway. Teslin Lake was one
of the waterways to the Yukon River and the Klondike
during the gold rush of 1898. Steamers plied the waters
of Teslin Lake until the 1940s.
The
people of Teslin are involved in hunting, trapping and
fishing as well as providing services to tourists. This
is a choice area for fishing. Charter trips are available
from Coyote Air (867-390-2605) to remote lakes, or for
wilderness trips down the Wolf River. Other facilities
include houseboat charters at Morley Bay (Mobile Radio
JR3 9305), and mountain bike rentals 11 KM south of
Teslin at the Dawson Peaks Adventure Company (867)
667-1103.
We
recommend visiting the George Johnson Museum, operated by
the Teslin Historical Society, open June-September,
featuring the cultural history of the Tlingits, artifacts
from pioneer days, and George Johnson's
photographs.
