Dining Around Lake Tahoe

South Shore | North Shore
Tahoe City & Truckee

This is a very selective listing of recommended restaurants in the Tahoe area. The choices range from deluxe fine dining in lakeside restaurants and casino-hotel dining rooms to simpler places serving basic fare -- many of these are economical cafes and bistros serving great food.
We'll add to the list as we additional places are reviewed. Here are a few of the best places to eat:

South Shore Restaurants:

Fresh Ketch

Tahoe Keys Marina, South Lake Tahoe -- (530) 541-5683
At 2433 Venice Drive, just off Highway 50, this is a casual dining room, on the water, serving high quality seafood and other dishes with good service and atmosphere -- open for lunch and dinner. Dinner is served in the upstairs dining room, overlooking the marina.

Cantina Bar & Grill

711 Emerald Bay Rd., South Lake Tahoe -- (530) 544-1233
Served both traditional Mexican and up-to-date Tex/Mex dishes, plus beer, wine, and liquor. This is not a high-toned, sophisticated place, but is a family restaurant serving tasty (and huge) Mexican dishes.

Nepheles California Cuisine

1169 Ski Run Blvd., South Lake Tahoe -- (530) 544-8130
Fresh fish, duck, and game dishes are on the top of the menu of this interesting place, including a bar. Try out their hot tub rentals.

Champagne Brunch on weekends from 8:30 a.,m. to 2 p.m.
This is the ultimate gourmand experience for seafood fans. From fish tacos to fried and barbecued shrimp, slipper lobster, oysters raw and cooked -- in fact you'll be long sated before running through the bounty of this buffet.

19 Kitchen Bar

At Harvey's Resort Hotel -- Stateline, NV.
Fine dining at the top of the hotel, on the 19th floor. A great view and good food, well-served. Open for dinner nightly, and Wed.-Sat. for lunch. This room was called Lewellyn's for a long time, and took on its new name in summer 2006.

Cabo Wabo Cantina

At Harvey's Resort Hotel -- Stateline, NV.
Before attending a summer concert at Harvey's outdoor amphitheater, we dined briefly in the Sammy Hagar inspired Wabo Cabo restaurant in the lower level at Harveys.. It's a loud and crowded place with wait lines often holding up would-be diners. What to expect? The food was beyond expectations. Harveys is one of the better places to eat in South Lake Tahoe/Stateline and Cabo Wabo came through. The cuisine is Mexican -- fish tacos, tostadas, burritos, etc, plus entrees featuring steak and other standards with a latin touch. The dishes we tried were inventive and beyond the ordinary Mexican/American dining experience.

Forest Buffet

At Harrah's Tahoe Hotel -- Stateline, NV
On the 18th floor, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, including a special seafood buffet on Fridays evenings, and a Sunday Champagne brunch.
